I just flat out will not travel by air. Yes, that's limiting, and means it's a huge problem to see some family. So be it. If I can't drive, I can't be there. And some drives are no longer doable, even when the roads go there. This comes from an expat who lived in Asia for years, and averaged a round trip somewhere (not necessarily overseas) about once a month of a 30 year career. The system's not just broken, it's intolerable. It's not the dollar cost. It's the completely irresponsible carriers, the unbelieveably bad conditions on the ground and on the plane, and the general squalor. I won't.
I can remember when I started my career, it was still in the day where you could park your car and sprint to the gate, getting there just as they were closing the door. Then, of course, came the TSA and "be there at least two hours early" stuff. Now I have a metal hip and have to get a pat down *every time*. It used to be that I would drive rather than fly if the trip was more than four hours. Then eight hours. Then 10 hours. Now I'm willing to find a hotel half way and take two days to drive it rather than fly.
My wife is an asthmatic with bad knees. During the Covid thing we had to walk about 45 minutes to get from one gate to the next during a stopover during a flight from Tennessee to Las Vegas. She ended up being unable to walk and had a bad asthma attack from wearing a mask. When we asked for a wheelchair, they said they were only available to people who scheduled them ahead of time. Assholes. We rented a car and drove back from Las Vegas rather than go through that again. It took three days, but we stopped at a lot of interesting places -- Lake Mead, Dodge City, etc.
The last time I flew out of Dublin to the U.S. (late in the Covid nonsense) it took four and a half hours just to get from the airport entrance to the GATE. We barely made the flight. I hope your experience was better...at least at the airport.
The airport and the TSA routines are miserable. Last flight, on Alaska, from Portland to either Phoenix or Tucson, there was fear in the air as an obnoxious, twittery, out of control gay mask Nazi flight attendant attacked passengers for mask violations. Have not flown since. Decided driving for three days was less stressful than going through TSA and flying for three hours. Alaska Airlines can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. And take that rude, arrogant little faggot with them.

ReplyDeleteDid you land in Canada?
ReplyDeleteNope, Dulles (D.C./Northern Virginia).
DeleteWhat, don't you all fly private jets?
