I remember my father telling me something when I was about 14 years old and I was very confused by it...
I had just broken up with the girl I was hanging around with, and I said something stupid about 'not wanting to live anymore' or some other juvenile defeatist bullshit.
His exact words fail me at this advanced age, but his advice to me at the time was both simple and profound. He said 'If you're ever going to understand who you are and what life is all about, you have to be able to look forward and backwards at the same time', or something damn close to that.
Ya know, I didn't get his gist at the time, but now - at nearly 70 - I absolutely get it. You can not know who and where you are if you're incapable of looking back at your life to realize how you got where you are, and if you can't look in to the future imagining where you want to be, you're probably lost where you are. Get it?

Case in point about perspective? Check out what folks today think is the best of the best...
There probably isn't a person over 40 working at this Entertainment Weekly website/media outfit. Can you imagine making a list of the top 20 (OR ANY NUMBER) Action/romance movies and they didn't include Gone with the wind?
They actually named Titanic the number one movie on that list.
Please - a story that had been told five times in movies before that and starred Leo? Get over yourselves. Okay, it is good, and it is big, but fuck, dude - you put a bullshit movie like Mr. & Mrs. Smith on the list and didn't even consider GWTW?
THAT, my friends, is a classic example of not having perspective.
The full list and some dubious explanations are found here:
Do they throw away all of the unsold VDay cards or save 'em and recycle them for next year? Next year when you go to buy one, how will you know if it's an old card or a new one? Life is full of little mysteries, ain't it...

This song has nothing to do with being black. This song has nothing to do with the United States of America. It is not a 'National Anthem'.
It's inclusion in any ceremony like the pre-game for Super Bowl is pandering at it's worst level, and it's racist on it's face. It is fascinating to read that it's inclusion would infuriate the 'right', as if the 'left' has a 'greater good' monopoly on something. Inclusion of this song does nothing more than exclude every other race and ethnicity by their absence. Should there be a Chinese-American, a Polish American or an Italian-American National Anthem?
If there is gonna be one, I'd nominate this:

back in the late 50's, the tolls were a dime, but eventually went up to a quarter, and now god only knows what they are.
My old man usta keep a roll of quarters in the glove box of the station wagon, and every once in a while when nobody was looking, I'd go in and help myself to one or two. He actually had one of these coin shooter things in the car, but I don't remember him ever using it. Then again, I was way in the back of the station wagon with the luggage getting my ass kicked by my bigger brothers - 'Boys, don't make me pull over and come back there...'

Joby Pool, 32, was charged with criminal damage and two counts of theft after towing away the trailer full of chocolate Saturday. West Mercia Police dubbed the candy-coated caper an “eggs-travagent theft.”Pool appeared Tuesday in Kidderminster Magistrates Court, where prosecutors argued his Easter-Bunny-in-reverse behavior would have taken “significant planning” to pull off.
According to the Guardian, Pool reportedly used a metal grinder to get through the gates of the unit housing the chocolate-stuffed trailer and used a stolen truck with false plates to steal it.

She is a consumate politician, who will say or do anything to get elected, and that's the number one reason why she shouldn't be. I wonder what other women will be throwing their bras in to the ring for 2024...

Sorry, but Gone With The Wind is one of the worst movies I have ever wasted hours of my life enduring. The only reason for seeing it is to be able to fully enjoy the Carol Burnett spoof "Went With The Wind," which is hilarious, and which is significantly less over-acted and melodramatic.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely on the money regarding the "Black National Anthem" ! No one ever even heard of the song until some self-loathing idot decided to shove it down everyone's collective throat !
