When Major League Baseball and the players union came to an
agreement to end the 99-day MLB lockout, fans were prepared to see several changes to the on-field product with the new CBA.
Pitch clocks, larger bases and banning the defensive shift were all changes that could be implemented in 2023. But one of the more popular moves was the apparent elimination of the rule that placed a “ghost” runner on second base for extra innings.
It turns out that baseball fans celebrated too soon because the rule is staying for at least another season.
According to The New York Post, the league and union agreed on a few additional changes like expanded rosters and allowing pitchers to remain in the game as a DH (to allow us to enjoy more Shohei Ohtani at-bats). But evidently, the extra-runner rule lives to fight another day - err, year.

A quick word about the ads that Google places on the blog: I know sometimes they're a pain in the ass, but having them is a very small price to pay for what Google does for me - and for you guys, too. Ya see, they provide this 'Blogger' platform free of charge to me and others and give us the tools to craft our blog posts the way we like to. That, plus the fact that they pay me a (very small) commission on the ads is a win for all of us, really.
One thing you have to know about the ads - some are really dumb and you probably have no idea why you're seeing them, right? Well, I have no idea either. I cannot see the ads that they're displaying to you.
Your surfing and search patterns determine how the algorithms decide what and when they're gonna show you. I have ZERO control over that. The only controls they do give me are what ads I think you shouldn't see (like those jerkoff click-bait websites and too many women's clothing things). Those I can stop from running.
... It's a bad year to be a chicken...
Nebraska has confirmed its first case of the bird flu in a commercial flock of chickens.
The state Department of Agriculture said the highly contagious disease has been found in a flock of 570,000 broiler chickens in Butler County.
Jessica Kolterman, a spokesperson for Lincoln Premium Poultry, confirmed that the flock is on a farm that raises chickens sent for processing at the company's Costco-affiliated operation in Fremont.
Bird flu so far has infected nearly 15 million birds in the U.S., the worst outbreak since 2015.
That outbreak seven years ago led to nearly 5 million laying hens being euthanized at six farms in Dixon County.
Nationwide, more than 50 million birds were killed in what is considered the worst outbreak on record.
Although that number does seem very high, it's important to have a little perspective on this. 50 million chickens is slightly less than 0.0166% of the total number of chickens produced in the country annually.
... The first lady, Jill Biden, complained about her husband’s choice
of Kamala Harris as running mate and now vice-president, according to a new book, asking: “There are millions of people in the United States. Why … do we have to choose the one who attacked Joe?”
The quote is contained in 'This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future', by the New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns, which is due to be published on 3 May. Excerpts have already been reported. Jill Biden’s reported remark was relayed by Politico on Tuesday.
Harris made her mark in the Democratic primary – and bruised Biden – at a debate in Miami in June 2019, criticising his opposition to bussing, a way of racially integrating public schools, as a young senator in the 1970s. At the time, Ole' Uncle Joe said he's didn't want his kid's schools turning in to 'racial jungles'. Nice guy you have for a President, huh?
