Back in the mid-60's we used to have these dances that they
called 'canteens'. They were held in the basement of the
grade school in my neighborhood, and if I remember they
were like two hours - from 6:30 to 8:30 once a month on Friday nights.
Everyone brought their own 45's, and the music
came from a small record player like this:
No cell phones, no Spotify, no internet, just kids dancing
to the Beatles, the Four Seasons and the Beach Boys.
And it was REALLY difficult not to let the girl know you
had a redwood tree in your pants the whole time. They knew
anyway. That's why they were in charge at all times...
Used to go to the dances at the churches in Baltimore. CYO (Catholic Youth Org.) and Luther League mid 60s. Good innocent fun.
ReplyDeleteWe had "sock hops" with various local garage bands. Was great!
ReplyDeleteWhat's with the arms on the guy in the blue shirt? horry clap. somebody nust've 'shopped that blonde head on.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have ours in the gym since Florida was never big on basements due to the water table....no shoes allowed on the gym floor, thus the "sock hops"...
ReplyDeleteI graduated high school in 1963 so I am an official old fart. We had sock hops in the high school cafeteria, played 45'5 on a portable record player similar to the one shown. I remember the dance went from 7 to 9 PM, chaperoned by teachers who volunteered to do so. Ah, the good old days.
