Joe Biden on Friday announced a halt to travel from eight African countries, despite his chief scientific advisor, Anthony Fauci, downplaying the likelihood of a ban only hours earlier. Fauci was on CNN shortly before 8am ET, and said that he was not convinced a travel ban was appropriate. He said there would be a meeting between U.S. scientists and their South African colleagues later on in the morning. Fauci then spoke to Biden for around 30 minutes, and by 2:30pm Biden had announced a ban. Last year, when Donald Trump was president, Biden was skeptical about the March 2020 ban on travel from Europe, saying it was too little, too late, and that Trump should have had a better plan in place in the first instance.
